Scarlet Macaw- Copán Ruins

May 1, 2018

The national bird of Honduras, a scarlet macaw in Copán Ruins in Western Honduras. Macaws are frequently depicted in the art of the Mayan Ruins in Copán including stone statues at the ball court and etchings on bowls and glasses. They were revered by the mystic leaders of Copán as spiritual envoys sent by the gods. The great period of the Copán Mayans was from 300-900 AD.
