SSJE: Mary Magdalene: Proclaiming Our Love

March 8, 2018

Today’s Question: Where have you seen Jesus this week?

The story in today’s scripture is about Mary Magdalene and her encounter at the tomb. The disciples had been there early in the morning but had found nothing but emptiness. So they left, returning to where they were staying, perplexed at the events of the previous 3 days. Next, Mary Magdalene peered inside and saw a different picture: two angels in brilliant white. She was crying, lamenting that her Lord had been taken away from her. She turned and saw a man, mistaking him for the gardener. It was when he spoke her name, “Mary” that her eyes were opened and she realized that she was in the presence of the risen Lord. She rushes to tell the other disciples what she has seen and what He has said.

It seems odd that Mary would be unable to recognize someone that she cared enough about to be crying over. I wonder if it may sometimes be true that familiarity breeds contempt. Perhaps we should take a closer look at the people we see day after day and determine how we can best proclaim their greatness to others.
