Santiago, my 7-1/2 month old golden retriever

Santiago, my 7-1/2 month old golden retriever

Our Dogs are Exhausted

Agatha Nolen March 30, 2020

Although I normally work from home one or two days per week, my 7-1/2 month old Golden Retriever, Santiago, is not used to having me around 24/7.

Not unlike my puppy, I have energy to spare right now. Although I’m occupied with work, my favorite distraction is to take Santiago for a walk. It used to be that we’d go for a short walk 3 or 4 times per day, but now it is upwards to 6 or 7.

By the end of the day, Santiago is exhausted.

I realize that even for him in his short puppy life, the last month has been disruptive. More walks, more chasing the ball in the backyard and fewer long naps. He doesn’t understand why we can’t play all day since he can see me home.

I seem to be as busy, but at different things. No trips to the Frist Art Museum, or wine with friends, or even church, but there is plenty to do around the house and neighborhood. It is great to see everyone outside mowing their lawns, walking with their children and dogs, and waving as they get the mail.

It is a different lifestyle and one that I am learning to enjoy. As I rethink my life in new terms today and tomorrow, I’m realizing that I spent a lot of useless time on useless things. More importantly, I appreciate the value of rest and prayers even more than I did before.

Rest from the craziness, and prayers for everyone in the world.

I know that even Santiago appreciates his naps (in between walks), and I’ll bet that he prays often to God in his own dog language.

As we learn a new normal for our life, what is so important that you will continue it, and what activities won’t need to be renewed? Is there a calling for you in this time of contemplation that is becoming clear? What are you supposed to do with the rest of your life?

I’m thankful for every day and the new ways that God continues to reveal Himself to us.

Blessings, my friend,
Agatha
