Christmas Wisdom

Agatha Nolen December 24, 2018

As humans we are different from other creatures in that we have an insatiable desire for wisdom. Since even early times in the Garden of Eden, the only fruit that Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat was from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. All the benefits of living with God in the beautiful garden didn’t outweigh their desire to be wise.

As we have learned through the centuries, humans are not always honest: we often purposefully deceive. It may be a question of an “honest” mistake versus an intentional one, or a “little white lie” rather than one intended to mislead, but the result is often the same: the lie is repeated until it is regarded as tru

It seems that there is no single source of truth that can be relied upon 100% in today’s world of politics and mass media. The rush to judge and condemn seems to have overwhelmed the rush to truth. We learn every day that once the “cat is out of the bag” it is impossible to correct all the mistruths and half-truths that have been virally spread.

For these twelve days of Christmas I’m seeking wisdom by reflecting on Scripture each day from teachings from the Brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (SSJE), an Episcopal monastery in Cambridge, MA. As I reflect on the intentional commitment of the Episcopal Church,  The Way of Love: Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life, these reflections seem like a good place to start as a source of truth in my life, shutting out the noisy clamor of misinformation and evil.

If you’d like to join me, I’ll be posting the podcast link each day in Christmastide for twelve days. You can subscribe directly to my blog to receive the daily updates, or I’ll also be posting on Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn.
