Today’s Question: What is the modern equivalent of footwashing?

In today’s lesson, we see Jesus’ exhorting us not by words but by actions in washing the disciples feet (John 13:14). Jesus became human so He could demonstrate to us in actions how we are to love one another. In ancient times, the disciples’ feet would have been grimy from walking so long in sandals on dusty roads. I can imagine the wonderful feeling of having all that dirt removed from loving hands with warm water. It is what the disciples needed first after a long journey.

In today’s world with modern conveniences we don’t really need our feet washed, but our need for love and understanding has never been greater.

I think the modern equivalent of footwashing is to spend time listening and engaging with others, encouraging them in their faith to fulfill the purpose that they have been created for.

Thoughtful listening, without distractions is the modern equivalent of footwashing.
