We are in another short period of waiting, between Ascension Thursday when Christ rose to heaven, and next Sunday when the Holy Spirit comes as we celebrate Pentecost.

After Jesus was taken up to heaven, the eleven remaining disciples stayed in Jerusalem for prayer and waiting. They called together a group of about 120 and plunged ahead nominating two qualified candidates to fill the void left by Judas’ defection and death. The two were Barsabbas (Justus) and Matthias. The disciples cast lots (submitting the decision to the ascended Lord) and Matthias won the title of the replacement disciple.

Although “Peter and the Eleven” are mentioned in Acts 2:14, we never hear of Matthias again, yet tradition holds that he was a faithful Christian.

I think of countless people in my life who were called to be ambassadors for Christ, but did not receive accolades or praise for their leadership. There were nuns who cared for me in pre-K, catechism teachers in elementary and middle school and countless adults (clergy and lay) who’ve led inspiring classes, preached thoughtful sermons, or just sat with me one-on-one as I explored my faith.

As we await the coming of the Holy Spirit, let us be like Matthias, spreading the good news and giving God all the glory.
