Great People
At the STORYLINE CONFERENCE in Nashville two weeks ago, Donald Miller shared five attributes of great people:
1. they’ve found something they love more than themselves,
2. they are single-focused with very clear ambitions of what they want to do and accomplish; they know what they are about and what they want,
3. they are willing to engage conflict and are not afraid; this makes them fascinating,
4. they are good, but they aren’t perfect, and,
5. they take others with them on the journey.
It is the last line that has stuck with me for the two weeks since the conference, “they take others with them on the journey.”
In Mark’s Gospel (6:7, 13) we read that Jesus never sent the apostles out alone: “And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.”
Paul had constant companions on his three missionary journeys: Barnabas and John Mark on the first journey, Silas on the second, and Timothy and Titus on the third (Acts 13-14, 16-21).
As I work through my storyline, I’ve found something that I love more than myself: my place in God’s story. I’ve started living this great story and I’m realizing how interdependent I am with other people; amazing people are accompanying me on this glorious journey.
“If we could but recognize our common humanity, that we do belong together, that our destinies are bound up in one another’s, that we can be free only together, that we can survive only together, that we can be human only together, then a glorious world would come into being where all of us lived harmoniously together as members of one family, the human family.”……..Archbishop Desmond Tutu
