Checklist Religion

Except for my college days, I’ve been a churchgoer all my life, but it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 that I understood the difference between a churchgoer and a disciple.

Friends who attend Germantown United Methodist Church in Germantown, TN forward me a daily devotional from the Senior Pastor. Yesterday Rev. Richard Smith wrote, “One can go to church every week and participate in all sorts of spiritual offerings but if along the way the individual is not really listening to God, not really wanting to grow and change, not really seeking to be more spiritually aware and grounded, then one is simply practicing what I call checklist religion.  It means going through all the motions, following all the protocols, checking off all the expectations, but having no real desire or intention to let God take charge of your life.”

It took a breast cancer diagnosis followed by a divorce before I let God take charge of mine.

Do you know anyone who is practicing “checklist religion”?

What about you? Are you really willing to let go and let God transform your life?

Blessings,
Agatha
